제 23 호 Season of Achievement
Kicker: EDITORIAL Season of Achievement by Ji-Min Baek, Editor-in-chief pjm5875@naver.com How did you all spend the sweltering summer break? While each of us had different goals and plans, I hope that everyone had a fulfilling vacation. I also set goals and worked towards achieving them, while also being exhausted from the heat during the break. With the pleasant spring sunshine and the intense summer heat behind us, autumn—the season of harvest—has now arrived. As we enter this season of achievement, I hope that you will take on new challenges and gain valuable experiences. I would like to introduce some upcoming events related to the SM Herald. In September, as the new semester begins, the SM Herald will be recruiting new Cub-reporters. If you have an interest in journalism, writing, or English newspapers, I encourage you to consider applying. Additionally, the SM Herald will be hosting the Sangmyung English Essay Contest in November. This contest will involve writing an essay based on one of the provided topics, following the specified format. We will promote the essay contest as the date approaches, and I appreciate your interest and participation. As I cheer for all of you who have diligently worked through more than half of the year, I hope that the efforts and preparations you have made will bring results and lead to a new beginning during this semester.
제 22 호 In the Middle of the Year
Kicker: EDITORIAL In the Middle of the Year by Ji-Min Baek, Editor-in-chief pjm5875@naver.com Half of the year is over and the semester is winding down. I am curious about how you all spent your semester. It may or may not have been enjoyable or satisfactory, but I hope each of you found some fulfillment. I understand that you are currently under a lot of stress as you prepare for your finals. That’s why resting is becoming more precious these days. Rest and health care are vital aspects of self-care, and I believe they contribute significantly to our ability to accomplish our goals, such as studying and working. I hope you take good care of yourself, preparing for your finals and final projects. It feels like just yesterday that I wrote the editorial for the beginning of the semester, but I feel that time passes really fast now that I am writing the editorial for the June issue. Our upcoming summer break will also fly by. I hope you enjoy the time to relieve the stress of the end of the semester and prepare for the next steps of your life. I wish you all success and happiness as you wrap up the semester amidst your busy daily life. Good luck on your finals!
제 21 호 Welcome to Spring 2024 at Sangmyung University
Kicker: EDITORIAL Welcome to Spring 2024 at Sangmyung University by Ji-Min Baek, Editor-in-chief pjm5875@naver.com The start of the spring semester always brings a fresh energy to campus. I think we make lots of new resolutions whenever a new year comes and everyone makes a plan for this semester during the winter break. I hope the winter break provided everyone with relaxation and an opportunity to prepare something that you want. March is a meaningful month for many students and it also means beginning. For freshmen, March is the start of the spring semester. It will give them various opportunities and experiences. I would like to congratulate them very much on their start and recommend them to try and experience many things. In addition, this is the start for me as the new Editor-in-chief of the SM Herald. We will release a total of four publications this year and the March issue is the start. Moreover, we plan to recruit new Cub-reporters in March, so if you are interested in this, it would be good to prepare an application. As with everyone, there will be expectations and fears before a new start. However, I think it will all work out if you prepare and practice the start well. I cheer for your new starts and university life.
제 20 호 Last But Not Least
Kicker: EDITORIAL Last But Not Least By Da-Hwee Kim, Editor-in-chief elfnme@naver.com This is my second and final winter as editor-in-chief. Time passes as if traveling at the speed of light. It seems like just yesterday that I first came here and started writing articles, but it's really hard to believe that two years have already passed. Actually, a lot of things happened while I was with the Herald. It's hard to list them all one by one, but I think I was able to learn about life and grow to the next level. In fact, when I say “the last time,” complex emotions come to mind, and the feeling of disappointment is greater than that of relief. I thought I would feel relieved when it was time to leave, but for some reason, a subtle feeling took hold of me. By the way, what does “last” mean to you? I hope each of you will think about it for a moment at least for five seconds. It may sound like a cliché, but isn't there a saying that the end of something is the new beginning of something else? No matter what happened this year or what you planned, whether it was good or bad, I hope you leave it all in your memories. Why? Because I want you to be happier than anyone else in the new year! Lastly, before I leave, I would like to leave a brief thank you. First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to former editor-in-chief Park Sol-hyang, who handed over the editor-in-chief position to me. I want you to know that this title has had a huge positive influence on me. And the 44th, 45th and 46th reporters who were with me! I was very grateful to them for always working hard and sincerely in meetings and writing articles. Without you guys, the SM Herald wouldn't be able to run. Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to Professor Samuel Alexander Denny, Jr., who always worked hard to proofread the manuscript, and to Director Kim In-cheol, who helped us with feedback on ideas. Thank you so much for everything. I hope you have a warm end of the year and a pleasant new year, and please continue to support the Herald in the future.
제 19 호 High Sky and Plump Horses
Kicker: EDITORIAL High Sky and Plump Horses By Da-Hwee Kim, Editor-in-chief elfnme@naver.com Autumn is often referred to as "the season when the sky is high and the horses get fat." However, there is another expression that indicates the calling of autumn. It's the "season of reading". During the semester, there will be more days when you are struggling with classes and assignments than days when you find time to relax, unlike during vacation. As a result, the time to read books will naturally decrease. Actually, if you look at the people around you, it seems that there are not that many people who read in their spare time. As an excuse for our busy lives, we tend to neglect reading at a distance. However, in fact, it can be seen that not having time is just an excuse because you can secure time to read books even if you reduce the time you spend on social media. Saying this, do I read a lot of books? Personally, I am the kind of person who loves to read books and tries to stay close to them. Even this summer vacation alone, I read at least one book a week, so I can say that I am not the type to read less. Anyway, the reason why I brought up the story of reading was that I thought about what it would be like to take a tiny break while reading these days when I am so immersed in electronic devices. Of course, there is no reason to read books, and nothing terrible happens if you don't read books. However, if you think about it, there are no elements that will be negative to you by reading a book! Rather, it may be full of things that help enrich your brain and mind! So why don't you try to bring books closer to your life starting today?
제 18 호 Enjoy Your Youth, Live It to the Fullest
Kicker: EDITORIAL Enjoy Your Youth, Live It to the Fullest By Da-Hwee Kim, Editor-in-chief elfnme@naver.com Did everyone prepare well for the upcoming final exams? It must feel like it was just yesterday that the midterm exams were over, but after enjoying the school festival and taking classes, you won't believe that the semester is coming to an end like this before you know it. Time seems to flow so fast that I can't catch it even if I really want to. It's a little sad fact, but I don't know if I feel that way more as I get older. Maybe that's why I already have the thought that this summer will pass in the blink of an eye. I think that each of you may or may not have plans, but what I want to say is simple. That is, everyone should fully enjoy their youth. Youth, which only comes once, cannot be valued with money. In addition, we must not forget that there is only one summer of 2023 in a lifetime. That's why I hope this summer will be a time for you to experience the maximum you can enjoy as a college student and make many beautiful memories. Wishing everyone a happy and precious summer!
제 17 호 Ready to Run
Kicker: EDITORIAL Ready to Run By Da-Hwee Kim, Editor-in-chief elfnme@naver.com This winter has been exceptionally cold. It snowed very much and recorded a record-breaking cold snap. However, now the warm spring is just around the corner. March means a new semester for us, and it is always full of hope and vitality. If you think of this year as a running race, this month is just the starting line. A fresh start is always exciting. Of course, as time passes, you may get tired and difficult things may happen. But I hope that doesn't make you frustrated or depressed. Because there are many bright days ahead of us. I hope all of you can take a long look forward and think wisely. In the hope that you will gain strength for each day that will unfold anew, I leave you with a few quotes that will fill your soul and boost your energy. “It’s never too late to become who you want to be. I hope you live a life that you’re proud of, and if you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start over.” — F. Scott Fitzgerald “I hope you realize that every day is a fresh start for you. That every sunrise is a new chapter in your life waiting to be written.” — Juansen Dizon “The magic in new beginnings is truly the most powerful of them all.” — Josiyah Martin Do you feel more confident after reading these quotes? Are you ready to run now? Then let's make it great again this year :)
제 16 호 The Best Is Yet To Come
Kicker: EDITORIAL The Best Is Yet To Come By Da-Hwee Kim, Editor-in-chief elfnme@naver.com The end of the year is just a new beginning for us. Why? Because without an end, there would be no new year and no fresh start! When it is December and the end of the year approaches, it is quite normal for some to be anxious, especially when they have unreached goals and unfulfilled dreams. However, I want every single one of you to stay calm and positive. Because every year brings its own unique set of victories and defeats, struggles and joys! Even though this year has never been perfect for you, it is completely fine. Rather than having regrets about the past, how about preparing for the bright future waiting for us? Although no one can take back time and make a brand new start, anyone can start now and make a marvelous ending. Hope you wrap up this year meaningfully and say farewell to 2022. I would like to close by recommending a few songs that will make you feel good and help you end the year. Happy end of the year everyone! 😊 - End-of-Year Playlist - 🎵 Have It All – Jason Mraz 🎵 Merry Christmas Everybody - Train 🎵 Seasons of Love – The Cast of Rent 🎵 Do They Know It’s Christmas? – Band Aid 30 🎵 Snowman - Sia
제 15 호 It’s Not Your Fault!
Kicker: EDITORIAL It’s Not Your Fault! By Sol-Hyang Park, Editor-in-chief cookie7152@naver.com I became a senior this year, and as the years go by, my career worries are getting deeper and deeper. I think it is not just my situation, so I would like to share some thoughts related to this. For teenagers, most of their career worries are 'study'. Some students will start from middle school, and most of them will have problems with entering college. For those in their twenties, most career concern is 'employment'. How and where to build the 'specs', and how to get into a better company even if you barely got the specs. Or, you may worry that the things you like and work do not match, or there is nothing you want to do. Me, a newcomer who has not gotten out of university even dares to offer a solution to these concerns, but there is something I would like to emphasize to myself and my peers – “It's not your fault.” It is also my favorite line from the movie “Good Will Hunting.” Of course, it is not to blame others or the environment for your situation unconditionally. In the process of grasping the reality you are in, I hope that you will not be engrossed in your problems. I also lost the strength to go further with so much self-blame whenever I was in certain situations. It is not just an individual problem that the situation has become. In a society that favors science and engineering majors - what about artistic or athletic people? What about a wandering or adventurous person like me? I still have not been able to get out of these worries, but I think the best effort is to do something and make an opportunity rather than do nothing and get frustrated. It would not be easy certainly, but wouldn't it be better to make an opportunity than to wait for it to come? As the weather is getting cold, 2022 is also entering the second half of the year. I hope that everyone will spend the rest of 2022 happily and proudly by creating opportunities for ‘you’ without blaming yourself too much. Additionally, this is my last editorial as an Editor-in-chief. Although it was a short time, the process of preparing the issue as the editor was very meaningful and happy. Best wishes for the future Herald and readers!
제 14 호 Revive Our Minds!
Kicker: EDITORIAL Revive Our Minds! By Sol-Hyang Park, Editor-in-chief cookie7152@naver.com The restrictions on COVID-19 have been eased a lot - society seems to be gradually reviving. Sangmyung University is also doing face-to-face lectures, various offline events, and school festivals. However, is it the same for us inside? Some may have suffered from Corona Blue due to the pandemic, some may have become more lethargic, and some may have gotten used to boredom at home. That's who I am. I was originally an active person who liked to meet people and explore various places, but I’ve become an introvert and little bit lazy because of the last two years of the pandemic. Now that many sanctions have been eased, I feel strange to go back to my previous self. It's as if I’m stuck with COVID-19 and can't get out of it. I wonder if you have escaped well from this Corona Blue, which is a topic that has been dealt with many times in our webzine. In a way, this may not get better as easily as the rapidly changing environment. However, we need to keep going - adapt to the changing environment, get out of the Comfort zone, communicate with society and review what goals or dreams we had not achieved due to COVID-19. Let’s restore our inner vitality little by little! Still, COVID-19 is still in progress, I hope you take care and finish the semester well.
